SUBSTANCE ABUSE - A WIDESPREAD ISSUE
|
Drug and alcohol addiction is an underestimated issue in our country.
Drug use
First a large number of Americans use drugs. According to the last published National Survey on Drug Abuse and Health (2006), 22,6 million Americans smoke marijuana, drink alcohol, snort cocaine shoot heroin, breathe inhalants and swallow prescription drugs. (U.S. Dept. of health and Human Services). Those numbers present a slight increase since 2001 (15.9 million).
Second, a large number (5 million), of those are in denial of their addiction and third among the illicit drug users who are seeking help half do not get it.
The preferred substances are marijuana, cocaine and pain killers. Pain killers have increased since 2002.

Alcohol use
An estimated 125 million people, slightly more than half of Americans aged 12 or older, reported being current drinkers of alcohol. Binge drinking (5 or more drinks in the last month) was reported by 23% or an estimated 57 million people. Heavy drinking (binge drinking on 5 days in the last month) was reported by 6.9 % or 17 millions people and binge drinking (5 or more drinks in the last month)
Drug use and alcohol use is a social threat and a mental health issue
About 10 million people report driving while under the influence of a drug and 30 million where driving while under the influence of alcohol at least once during the year. Among the people who had a major depressive episode 24 % were dependant on or abused alcohol or illicit drugs. In 2006, an estimated 12.4 percent of persons aged 12 or older drove under the influence of alcohol at least once in the past year. This percentage has decreased since 2002, when it was 14.2 percent. The 2006 estimate corresponds to 30.5 million persons
Tobacco use
72.9 millions people used tobacco the month prior to the survey, or 29.6 % of the population a decrease from 2002 in particular in the young population 12 to 17 year old. An additional 62 million was smoking at the moment of the survey.

Illicit drug use
In 2006, an estimated 20.4 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) illicit drug users, meaning they had used an illicit drug during the month prior to the survey interview. This estimate represents 8.3 percent of the population aged 12 years old or older. Illicit drugs include marijuana/hashish, cocaine (including crack), heroin, hallucinogens,
inhalants, or prescription-type psychotherapeutics used nonmedically.
The rate of current illicit drug use among persons aged 12 or older in 2006 (8.3 percent) and was similar to the rate in 2005 (8.1 percent). Majijuana cocaine methamphetamines users remain the same since 2005. However pain prescription used non-medically is on the rise. Of the 7 Milions who use prescription drugs 5.2 millions use pain relievers, an increase from 4.7 million in 2005.

influence of illicit drugs during the past year. This corresponds to 4.2 percent of the
